Metop-A Satellite Captures Image of Forest Fire in Northern Israel

Metop-A satellite observes a plume of smoke carried by easterly winds, originating from wildfires in the Carmel Mountains, near Haifa in northern Israel.

The Metop satellites carry on board a set of state-of-the-art sounding and imaging instruments that offer improved remote sensing capabilities to both meteorologists and climatologists, improved atmospheric soundings, as well as measuring atmospheric ozone and near-surface wind speed and direction over the ocean.

A plume of smoke originating from wildfires in the Carmel Mountains, northern Israel, is observed by the AVHRR instrument onboard EUMETSAT’s Metop-A satellite (03/12/10 07.31 UTC).
