Element 112 Named Copernicium in Honor of Nicolaus Copernicus


The heavy chemical element 112 discovered at GSI Helmholtz Centre was named Copernicium on Monday, 12 July 2010. The symbolic baptism was celebrated for all time the valid entry into the periodic table solemnly. Copernicium is 277 times heavier than hydrogen and the heaviest officially recognized chemical elements in the periodic table. The name of the element is in honor of  the great astronomer Nicolaus Copernicus (1473-1543).
